El suceso se report\u00f3 en un diario provincial como un &#8220;singular duelo criollo&#8221; en un pueblo del Chaco en v\u00edsperas de Navidad. El hecho narrado comienza con una provocaci\u00f3n, una reacci\u00f3n y un enfrentamiento desigual que culmina con la muerte de Jos\u00e9 Luis. Un testigo del hecho dice la frase clave que da inicio al relato: &#8220;mataron a Lorenzo Lamas&#8221;.
